2022 London to Sydney Marathon Car

Purchased from Sussex sports cars as a rusty shell we restored the car ready for long distance rallies. The rubber bumper spec gave us 2“ extra ground clearance under the bell housing of the diff.

The shake down of the car was the MASA Euroclassic from 2000 to 2004. We entered and finished the 2004 LONDON TO SYDNEY - the only GT to finish. We duplicated most of the electrical parts, fuel parts, and brake systems, we added a 50 Litre ally fuel tank and skid panelled both engine and fuel tank. The European and Central Asia sections in Greece, Turkey and Iran were ok. In India and Australia, suspension, brake and exhaust failures were very difficult. We lost our entire offside wheel but got towed into BIRDSVILLE where they made a new wishbone and front suspension unit overnight for 850 $ Australian. Two nights later we went into a low ditch with no brakes. We found an old Post Office and General Store; the semi-blind owner had a full workshop with swaging tools. We were back in the rally next morning with no charge and lots of love !!!!!!

Coils, plugs, Lucas bits all failed but we managed from our own spares. Carbs over heated but stolen towels frozen in the hotel mini-bar overnight wrapped round both pots got us to the finish. Who said you can’t stop vaporisation?
This is a great car now rarely used in competition but exercised regularly thanks to the MG Owners Club team in Cambridge.
